Why Everything You Know About Annihilationism Is A Lie.

The archived message can be accessed on our podcast page.

This won’t be your standard cult by cult debunking series, rather it’s all about the common teachings most of these groups will use. This week we kick off the series with the oh so hot topic of:

Annihilationism

Objectives:

-Identify what annihilationism is.

Annihilationism: (also known as extinctionism or destructionism[1]) is a belief that after the final judgment some human beings and all fallen angels (all of the damned) will be totally destroyed so as to not exist, or that their consciousness will be extinguished,[2] rather than suffer everlasting torment in hell (often synonymized with the lake of fire).

-Identify what cult groups follow this teaching: Jehovah’s Witnesses, 7th Day Adventists, etc…

Some Christian denominations which are annihilationist were influenced by the Millerite/Adventist movement of the mid-19th century. These include the Seventh-day Adventists, Bible Students, Christadelphians and the various Advent Christian churches. Additionally, the Church of England's Doctrine Commission reported in 1995 that "[h]ell is not eternal torment", but "non-being". Some Protestant and Anglican writers have also proposed annihilationist doctrines.

  • Hebrew Roots movement

  • Some Messianic Jews believe in annihilationism

  • Also atheists, who are offended at the thought of being identified as a religion, but are pretty stuck the idea of nothing happening when a person dies.

Regarding annihilationism, here's what they say:

-Isaiah 28:21 "Strange thing for God to punish the wicked..."

-Hebrews 12:29 "God will consume you if you're wicked..."

-Ezekiel 28:14 "Lucifer passed through the fire and wasn't burned..."

-Job 20:5-9 "The wicked can't be found when they die..."

-Revelation 20:10 "They believe 'forever and ever' only means 'a period of time...'"

Why does a person believe it? What texts do they use outside of the Bible?

7th Day Adventists primarily use The Great Controversy along with any writings of their founder Ellen White. Jehovah’s Witnesses will use whatever their magazines tell them each month.

What the Bible actually says:

-Matt 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30 "Weeping and gnashing of teeth..."

“But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

-Matt 17:8; 25:46 -Mark 3:29; 9:44, 46, 48 -Luke 3:17; 16:19-31 -Romans 2:8-9 2 -Thess 1:9

“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me [i]to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life [j]maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to [k]hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 [l]where

‘Their worm does not die

And the fire is not quenched.’

45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into [m]hell, [n]into the fire that shall never be quenched— 46 where

‘Their worm does not die

And the fire is not quenched.’

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into [o]hell fire— 48 where

‘Their worm does not die

And the fire is not quenched.’

-Jude vs 5, 7, 13, 23 "Everlasting punishment..."

-Isaiah 33:14 -Proverbs 9:18 "Where the dead are..."

-Deuteronomy 32:22 "Where hell exists..."

-2 Peter 2:4-9 "Chains for everlasting punishment..."

“For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to [a]hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one ofeight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; 6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; 7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked 8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)— 9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,”

-Psalm 139:8 "God over hell..."
