Answers to Questions Christians have for other Christians.

Wasting time on Youtube is one of my favorite pastimes. I know it’s not the best use of my time, but sometimes it’s just nice to sit back and watch a relaxing Paul Washer sermon (I find his “punch you in the soul” style of preaching comforting). And there’s nothing quite like a glass of milk at night while watching some backyard scientist mix together calcium hypochlorite (pool shock) and DOT 3 brake fluid.

Warning: Please DO NOT mix together pool shock and brake fluid. Just watch the non-professionals on Youtube do it instead. It’s just as satisfying and not nearly as dangerous.

This guy is one of my favorites…

So now that you’re all done watching videos of guys mixing pool shock and brake fluid on Youtube, let’s continue...

On one such occasion I came across a video from Buzzfeed titled “Questions Christians have for other Christians.”

I normally have no interest in anything remotely popular or trendy (if you couldn’t tell), but on this occasion curiosity got the best of me, and I noticed that it had one of my favorite comedians in it, John Crist. I figured that if it had John Crist in it then it had to be funny.

Well, I was wrong...

The first half of the questions that they asked were kind of silly and slightly entertaining, but for the most part they were kind of stupid. Yes, I said stupid. Sorry if that offends people, but I’m not really into sugar coating things. Chances are no matter what I say or how nice I say it, you will disagree with it anyway, and I will have wasted my time trying to make it sound sweet. It’s like putting powdered sugar on kale. No matter what you do, you’re still eating kale.

I wasn’t entertained much by the first half and was about to watch something else, when the video suddenly took an intriguing, and spiritually deadly, turn. It beckoned me to endure it all the way to the end as each question got progressively more unbiblical and spiritually poisonous, and by the end my boredom was replaced with disgust and disappointment. My heart felt broken for the people in the video, most of whom are probably lost and don’t know it.

As I sat next to my wife, recovering from the onslaught of worldly rubbish that just defiled our brains, we began to discuss in depth what we had just heard, applying real, Biblical truth to reveal the rhetoric and fallacies hidden in each question that was asked. And as we were talking, it dawned on me that though God had blessed us with discernment to see through the lies, that might not be the case for everyone. And as I dwelt on that for a moment I realized how easily a young Christian, or a curious unbeliever, might be terribly lead astray by such a video as this. And as I recalled the sobering words of Jesus in Matthew 18:6, that thought made me cringe even more.

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”

As a result, I decided it was necessary for me to share some of the insights that God showed my wife and I through His Word to help others see past the rhetoric and emotionalism and avoid being sucked into the lies and worldly foolishness being preached in this video.

In the next couple of articles we will break down a few questions together, shine the Light of God’s Word on each one, and see what is really going on. But first, let’s get a few of the stupid ones out of the way, because they’re... well you’ll see.

Why does Christian music always sound like a mixture of Nickleback and Third Eye Blind?

Put this one in the Stupid file. Apparently they’ve never listened to Relient K (punk), P.O.D. (rap-core), Five Iron Frenzy (ska), Skillet (hard rock), NeedToBreathe (indie-folk), NewWorldSon (roots), Unspoken (amazing), and the list goes on.

Do devotions actually happen if you didn’t post about it on Instagram?

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it... do the other trees laugh at it? Ok, I understand her point, but what’s wrong if some people simply want to share with others how God is at work in their life? Lots of people post how sin is at work in their life and no one seems to have any problems with that.

How come we all love Tim Tebow?

Well, when someone publicly makes a stand for Jesus Christ and lives out their faith unashamed, I give them 2 thumbs up. How about you?

Why can’t you just pray? Why does it have to be a prayer with someone [in the background playing music]?

Some churches like that. There are lots of other churches who don’t. If it bothers you, talk to your pastor, or just go to one of those other churches. Next!

Yeah, how come everyone is still supporting Donald Trump?

Seriously, dude? I could equally ask how come so many people are working double time to viciously discredit every single word and action he does. Has anybody but me picked up on that pattern? I’m not big on politics, but so much of the brazen trash talk seems so uncalled for, as if his mere existence is a crime against humanity to some people. And as we say in New York, what’s it to ya? I mean, he’s sort of the President of the United States. Re-read Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2:13-17 and see if that answers your question.

How come we all love Chick Fil-a?

I think we all know the answer to this one. Spicy Deluxe Chicken Sandwich! So open that “stupid” file and jam this one in there too.

Well, that’s all I will deal with in this article. In the next article I will provide some commentary on the more serious questions that definitely have some merit to them. In the 3rd and last article, I will address what I felt were the 3 heavy hitters, but if you want to know what they are then come back each week and see! Until then, may God richly bless you with the knowledge of His Son, Jesus, and please put everything you hear, see, and read to the test against Scripture. You’ll be amazed at how much of it really is nothing but bologna sandwiches (to put it nicely 😉).
